On Sunday 18 December 1994, on the Cirque d'Estre, Jean-Marie Chauvet, led his two friends Éliette Brunel and Christian Hillaire towards the cliffs: a slight breeze coming out of a small hole, at the end of a little cave drew his attention, and he wanted to investigate. All three of them are passionate speleologists, and have had countless discoveries and firsts. It was late afternoon, and the little cave into which they entered was already known, located very close to a major hiking trail. But there, behind the fallen rocks, they were sure there was something, so they dug and unblocked a passage, then slipped inside. They found themselves looking out over a dark, empty space. They didn't have the equipment to continue. It was already dark, and they went back to their vehicles, took the essentials, and after hesitating a little, eventually returned to their discovery. They used their speleological ladder to descend, and discovered a vast chamber with a very high roof, filled with splendid, glimmering concretions. They pushed on in single file towards another, equally vast chamber and admired the unexpected geological beauty around them. They also noticed animal bones. They explored almost the whole network, and on their way back, Éliette noticed a small, red, ochre mammoth on a rocky pendant in the beam of her headlamp: "They were here!" she cried out, and from then on, they carefully looked at all the walls, discovering hundreds of paintings and engravings.

It's a story that begins a hundred million years ago, stretching from the formation of the limestone rock right up until the discovery of the Aven d'Orgnac, in 1935, which now allows visitors to admire the gigantic underground chambers and their majestic crystal formations.
It's a human story too, from the very first fire-lit tales and the thousands of flint blades that were sharpened here, more than 350,000 years ago, to the continuing educational work at the Cité de la Préhistoire. Come learn a little and dream a lot, surrounded by birdsong and the chanting of the cicadas...

The famous cave that you’re about to visit was hollowed out of the limestone rock at the height of the Jurassic period (Kimmeridgian, Tithonian - between 146 and 135 million years ago), and is only one branch of a huge underground network covering thirty kilometres or so.
Its history began 35 million years ago (Eocene, Tertiary period) and is still continuing today, for La Cocalière is a living cave, i.e. still in formation.

Park at the Chassagnes church square.
Head down due south through the village and reach a very broad stony track (1) by a short climb which joins another horizontal track.
Take it and reach the hermitage of Saint Eugene (2), then continue for about 200 m to reach a broad platform overlooking Chassagnes. Retrace your steps to then make a left along a blue marked trail that leads to a point of interest: La Gleysasse, views and cave (3).
Stay on the path that runs around the cliff and majestically overlooks the meandering Chassezac.
Then head on to a crossroads, turn right along the marked path (in Yellow) where a sign reads (4) “Les Trois Seigneurs” (at this point do not pay attention to the yellow cross on the right). “Les Trois Seigneurs” (The Three Lords) (5) is the crossroads with the GR4. Turn left, cross the road to reach the Les Clairières car park. Follow the Green markings along Le Sentier de la Vierge (6). This trail loops back to the car park.
Head back across the road to return to the Trois Seigneurs crossroads (5). Turn left on the GR4 Keep on this route for about 1 km until a Yellow-marked trail starts on the right (7) leading to the easily visible Chapel of Sainte Philomène.
At the chapel below the trail joins the car park.
